Keeping Pets in Loving Homes Since 2024

The Human-Animal Support Coalition was established in February of 2024 when a diverse group of community members joined together to develop and implement long-term, sustainable safety net programs for pets inspired by the Humane Society of the United States’ Pets for Life Program.

At that time, current U.S. census data and average pet ownership rates estimated that there were over 10,000 pets in Temple, TX and 3,300 pets in Belton, TX all living in poverty. We researched national programs that were working to keep pets in the homes that loved them and took action locally to begin to model these programs.

Holistic Approaches to Animal Welfare and Community Support

Concurrently, many members of our organization were former volunteers at our local animal shelter, where greater than 1,000 cats and dogs were being euthanized each year. We witnessed an opportunity to advocate for modern animal sheltering practices, such as a trap-neuter-vaccinate-return program for Community Cats. Importantly, we saw that many owners were surrendering their pets for reasons that could be prevented if they had access to affordable resources.

Through education, working to establish safety net programs, and advocacy for modernizing programming at our local shelter, we are taking a holistic approach to animal care and welfare in our community.

Our formula for success in addressing the multidisciplinary issues of pet retention, overpopulation, and lifesaving at our local shelter is forming community partnerships. We understand that where people suffer, pets suffer and it will take a large cross section of community stakeholders to create formative change for people and pets. People are our community’s greatest asset and we see inspiration around us every day. We partner to amplify current efforts and partner to fill in gaps where needed to help people and pets.
